About Hands On Media Education (HOME)

HOME equips students, educators, parents and organizations with the skills they need to access, understand, critically evaluate and create digital media in order to navigate and participate-fully in a rapidly-evolving online media environment. Started by Jessie Curell in 2015, HOME incorporated as a non-profit organization in 2020 in order to increase our impact and access for all to media education across Canada and beyond.


We seek an Assistant Program Manager who, working closely with the Executive Director (ED), will support the development of new program offerings, lead Media Education workshops, develop a team of workshop facilitators, and provide related operational & marketing support. We are looking for someone who has experience in community management, is excited about media education, and is at ease collaborating with groups of facilitators, participants, and clients to ensure smooth programming. The ideal candidate will possess experience as an educator and/or media producer, and must be comfortable representing HOME across a variety of public-facing avenues. We are looking for an organized and focused individual, ready to coordinate with a small team of passionate, mission-driven people.This is a new role, so there is a great opportunity to shape and grow the position. 

Hands On Media Education is headquartered in Vancouver, though the team is distributed. This role is conceived to be a part-time 3-month contract, but we intend to increase the hours of this position towards a full-time position within 3-12 months. Some flexibility in working hours is required since programming will be offered to various clients in different time zones of Canada.

Responsibilities:

This role has split time between program delivery, related operational and marketing responsibilities, & new program development.

Program Delivery (40%)

HOME provides students, teachers, parents and organizations with online & in-person Media & Digital Literacy Workshops. As the lead Workshop Facilitator, you will:

  • Coordinate with clients to schedule workshops

  • Meet with clients prior to workshops to ensure objectives are met

  • Deliver in-person and online HOME workshops in a professional and experienced manner

  • Collect feedback from clients following each workshop to improve future workshops.

Operations and Marketing (40%)

As a small team, the success of our programming depends on sharing responsibility across operations and marketing tasks. Working with the ED, you will:

  • Prepare and present marketing materials and reports relating to programs and participants

  • Provide input on marketing & sales strategies to the project lead

  • Prepare contracts and invoices for HOME’s services

  • Perform other administrative tasks

  • Coordinate with members of teams from other HOME projects to share resources when necessary

New Program Development (20%)

We are continually developing new courses, services, and resources to support the adoption, and use of Digital Literacy. Working with the ED, you will:

  • Develop new resources, courses, and modules 

  • Conduct research and assess new funding opportunities 

  • Assess project viability in light of potential revenue streams

  • Lead trainings on topics related to Media Education & Digital Literacy

At a rapidly evolving and responsive organization, work may change and other duties may be assigned.

About you

Required skills and experience:

  • You have at least 2 years of workshop facilitation with a wide range of participants (eg: age, cultural background, socioeconomic status)

  • You have strong media production skills including all aspects of filmmaking and digital storytelling (storyboarding, photography, video editing, audio production/recording...) 

  • You have some experience with program or project management

  • You have a strong public service orientation with the ability to interact effectively with students, educators and others working in higher education

  • You are invested in employee growth and initiative

  • You have experience with writing guides, newsletters, or other marketing material

  • You are an excellent written and verbal communicator

  • You have knowledge of the Digital Literacy field, open publishing, and/or higher education

  • You have knowledge of inclusive design and accessibility best practices within education

  • You are familiar using Google Suite, Mailchimp, Canva, Facebook and Twitter

  • You are mission-driven and fuelled to improve the educational sector

Compensation, Benefits, and Workplace Culture

Compensation: $30/hour X 10 hours/week
